A WOMAN has died after being struck by a train in Hampshire.

Passengers were left waiting in the carriages for more than two hours, some of that spent in pitch black when the power failed, as the emergency services dealt with the casualty.

Staff on board made their way through the carriages handing out glow sticks so people could see.

Journalism student Annabel Dry was caught up in the chaos and told the Daily Echo how the train slammed to a halt when the collision happened.

She spoke to fellow passenger Gary Walsh was sat in the front carriage at the time, and said:

‘I’ve never been on a train that has stopped so fast.

"As the train was breaking, I felt the floor beneath my feet vibrate heavily. I thought we’d hit a tree."

Another passenger, who asked not to be named said: "I feel sick. I can’t believe this has happened, my thoughts go out to the driver and the poor person’s family, it’s so tragic.’

Annabel described how the train’s driver was taken away from the scene imminently, as emergency teams arrived.

She told how after a flurry of announcements, the train had its engines switched off and was left to run on its batteries until they ran out- leaving the passengers waiting in the dark.

Glow sticks were handed out to the travelling customers by the conductor whilst the emergency team finished clearing up the incident.

At around 10 pm last night, the train set off again from the Bedhampton area where the accident happened, taking passengers to Fratton station where they were able to make their way home.

A spokesman from British Transport Police (BTP) stated that the officers who attended the incident which happened at 19.43 pm are treating the death as non-suspicious.

South West Trains said lines between Portsmouth Fareham and Havant were shut for three hours following the incident which happened at 8.05pm.
