POLICE have today cordoned off a Hampshire road after a woman was assaulted during the early hours of yesterday.

Officers wearing white suits have been scouring through hedges and undergrowth in Marsh Lane, Lymington, close to the junction with Harvester Way.

Hampshire police confirmed they are investigating reports that a 20-year-old woman was assaulted in the road in the early hours of this morning. They are not providing any further detail.

Residents say the police presence is highly unusual and attracting a lot of attention in the town.

One man, who drove past the scene, told the Daily Echo: "There were a few police down there but I have no idea what they are looking for.

"It appears that they have taped off around 50metres of the road and you can see the forensic officers working their way through it. It's really unusual for this area."

The scene is opposite a number of houses were residents this morning told of their surprise at what was happening.

Daily Echo:

One man, who asked not to be named, said: "The crime figures for Lymington are low. Seeing something like this is a surprise - you just don't get it here."

A spokesman for Hampshire police told the Daily Echo they were investigating reports that a 20-year old woman had been assaulted in the early hours.

She said: "Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has any information should contact the Western Investigation Team at Southampton Central police station on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
