THERE was witchcraft and voodoo spells as young dancers put on a magical show.

Rock Challenge is back in Southampton and hundreds of school and college students have been battling it out to be named dancing kings and queens.

Last night’s top prize went to Regents Park Community College with Mobile Lovers, a performance exploring our relationship with the internet.

Second prize was snapped up by Woodlands Community College with a dance exploring the damaging effects of a culture obsessed with beauty while third prize went to The Henry Cort Community College of Fareham, which looked at the life of Mozart.

And Redbridge Community School came in fourth with their interpretation of Snow White.

Pupils from Swanmore College also performed at the show at the O2 Guildhall Southampton with their dance Where Have All The Children Gone? which told the story of three missing girls, while students from Peter Symonds College delved into the world of witchcraft with their dance about Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and her mum Marguerite.

They were also up against Crookhorn College in Waterlooville, St Edward’s School in Poole and The Wellington Academy in Tidworth.

It comes after Chamberlayne College for the Arts scooped the top prize on Monday, with Richard Taunton Sixth Form College coming second and Testwood Sports College getting third place.

Tonight Great Oaks School, Itchen Sixth Form College, St Anne’s Catholic School, Wildern School, Toynbee School and Hamble Community Sports College will compete in the third heat of the ninth annual challenge.

Winners from each heat will compete again this summer.
