POLICE have released more details in their bid to find a woman who was seen “neglecting” a baby at a Hampshire supermarket.

As reported, worried shoppers raised the alarm after claiming they could see the infant being “manhandled”.

Witnesses said that the baby was thrown into its pram and hit its head while in the McDonald’s restaurant area of Asda in Totton. It is claimed the woman then ignored the baby’s cries and carried on eating a burger.

Police have today issued more information, including a description of the woman who was seen abusing the baby, thought to be six to eight weeks old.

Officers are working with Asda and McDonald’s to analyse CCTV footage.

The woman involved is described as white, in her 50s, of a large build and was wearing a baggy top.

A spokesman from Asda said the shop was assisting police with enquires, but refused to comment further.

Customers in the store were so concerned they initially called the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). The child welfare charity then called in Hampshire police.

A statement from Hampshire police said: “Police are appealing for witnesses after receiving a report of a concern for welfare following an incident at McDonald’s in Asda, Totton, on Monday.

“Members of the public reported they had seen a woman who they believed ‘manhandled’ a very young baby in her care between 4pm and 4.30pm.

“Officers are working with the store to try and identify the woman and the baby and to establish if any offences have occurred.”
