THREE people are in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in a busy city centre nightspot.

Police taped off Carlton Place in Southampton at around 12.30am yesterday morning after the incident, in which four pedestrians were injured.

Officers have arrested two city men in relation to the incident.

Witnesses said they saw the car drive into a group of revellers and a doorman in the road.

Others said the area was swarming with people as police investigated.

Jason Turner, who works in the nearby Tap House, said: "There were lots of police and two ambulances and there were lots of people around."

All the victims were treated at the scene before being taken to Southampton General Hospital, three with serious injuries and one with minor injuries.

A police van and several officers were on the scene at 1am but there is only some tape left as of late morning.

A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were called to the scene at 12.25am this morning to Carlton Place to a road traffic collision involving a car and pedestrians.

“We sent four ambulance crews, emergency care practitioners, an ambulance officer and a hazardous area response team.

“Four patients were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Southampton General Hospital.

“Three of the patients were taken in a serious condition and the fourth taken had minor injuries.”

The road is home to several bars and is a popular destination at weekends.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said a 22-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, both from the city, had been arrested on suspision of causing grievous bodily harm.

The men are currently being questioned by police.
