THOUSANDS of cyclists will take to the streets of Southampton once more as a popular one-day event returns to the city.

Sky Ride Southampton will take place for the sixth time this summer, with city centre streets turned into one huge cycling route for the day.

Last year 11,000 people ranging from biking beginners and fancy dress-wearers to cycling fanatics rode along the 7.8km route.

The route, which featured some of the city’s most famous landmarks including the Bargate and medieval walls, was also dotted with a range of activities including cycling obstacle courses and sprint zones.

The event was launched in Guildhall Square by Olympic gold medallist Jason Queally, Team Sky professional cyclist Nathan Earle and Gus McKechnie from Southampton, who has raised more than £2m for charity through his cycling exploits.

And now it is set to happen all over again on July 19 after Sky and British Cycling announced the city will host yet another Sky Ride event.

It will be one of 15 events taking place across the UK this summer, with the city centre set to be transformed into a car-free zone for one day only.

There will also be music, entertainment and competitions, with full details set to be confirmed over the next few months.

A festival atmosphere Sky Ride ambassador and multiple Olympic gold medal winner Sir Chris Hoy said: “Sky Rides close towns and cities for big bike events so you can ride safely on traffic-free streets, with a huge festival atmosphere and loads to do both on and off the bike.

“They are great fun and a great way to get on your bike.”

City council cabinet member for communities, Satvir Kaur, said: “Southampton City Council is extremely pleased to be partnering with British Cycling and Sky for another year.

“Cycling is an activity that we all know how to do but often does not form part of our daily lives.

“As a partnership we want to make it as easy as possible for people to cycle more regularly and Sky Ride Big Bike Events are the perfect way to get involved.”
