A CHEMICAL alert was issued at a block of flats this morning.

The Hazmat team from St Mary's fire station was sent to Erikson House at Lucia Foster Halls in Royal Crescent Road in Southampton after a fibre glass repair kit sparked an alert at around 3.22am.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said a polyester resin from the kit caused irritation to people in the flat.

Crews from Redbridge and Hightown fire stations were sent to support firefighters at the scene.

Four people were taken to Southampton General Hospital by South Central Ambulance Service as a precaution.

Firefighters used fans to ventilate the flat and the area was made safe by 4.15am.

The block did not have to be evacuated as the incident unfolded.
