THE acclaimed ballet, La Bayadère is reworked for the 21st Century by leading choreographer, Shobana Jeyasingh, at The Point next week.

Bayadère – The Ninth Life is a radical re-imagining of the celebrated, La Bayadère.

Moving between fact and fantasy, the original story is interwoven with the first ever visit of Indian dancers to Europe in 1838.

The many-layered narrative presents a fresh new vision of dance that belongs to both India and Europe and features originally commissioned music by Gabriel Prokofiev, the London-based composer, producer and DJ.

Drawing on Marius Petipa’s original choreography, Shobana will illustrate the West’s fascination with the myth of the Orient.

Bayadere – The Ninth Life has been commissioned by the Royal Ballet Studio Programme and premieres in London in March before coming to The Point, Eastleigh on Thursday at 7.30pm.

The evening starts with a curtain-raiser by members of The Point’s dance classes, whose ages range from eight to 80 and is the result of their work with the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company.
