A 92-year-old man has been rushed to hospital with a serious head injury after a hit and run crash this morning.

The driver of a silver car collided with the elderly pedestrian in Hampton Lane, Blackfield before quickly leaving the scene.

The pensioner was then taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance for a serious head injury, which has been described as 'life threatening'.

The accident happened outside the Murco petrol filling station just after 7am.

The victim is understood to have been a man who was on his way to Blackfield post office and newsagents to buy his morning paper.

A member of staff at the Post Office said: "All I saw was a man lying on the ground with people standing all around him, on their phones."

Hampton Lane is closed between its junctions with Blackfield Lane and New Road.

Four police cars and a police road incident support van are parked at the scene. Officers are investigating the crash site, including bits of a wing mirror lying in the road.

Hampshire police are now investigating the incident after identifying the car and will be following enquiries to locate it this morning.

Senior investing officer, Sgt Darren Ord, said: “En elderly man was crossing from the newsagent’s to the petrol station when he was in collision with a car coming from his right.

“He suffered a serious head injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital, where his wife and son are with him.

“A female driver arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and spoke to officers.

“She has not been arrested but is being interviewed under caution.”

Hampton Lane is was closed until 11.45am while the other two roads were re-opened at 8.06am.

A spokeswoman for South Central Air Ambulance said: “We were called at 7.12am to a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Hampton Lane, Blackfield.

"We sent two ambulance crews and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance to the scene. One male patient was flown to Southampton General Hospital with life threatening injuries.”
