AS a regular reader of The Herald and sporadic contributor to your letters page I have in the past been somewhat quick to criticise your reporters. However, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Murray Ritchie, your Scottish Political Editor, on his dogged determination to get to the truth of the matter behind what appears to be a rather dubious money-laundering operation sanctioned by Alex Salmond called Business for Scotland.

If it is true that this organisation has been used as a front to conceal a single large benefactor of the SNP who wishes to remain anonymous one has to ask the very simple question: why?

Further, if it is also true that this single large benefactor was in fact Brian Souter one has to call into question his suitability to chair the committee, to be set up in the wake of the McIntosh Report, with the remit of investigating ways in which electoral reform can be used in local government to ensure greater openness, transparency, and accountability.

I take it that the decision to give Mr Souter this responsibility with the title of ''Champion for Change'' was taken before the story broke and I would therefore humbly suggest that a rethink might be the order of the day.

Well done, The Herald, and first-class reporting, Murray Ritchie.

Alan Stewart,
