Paul Kelleway, the top National Hunt jockey and trainer, who died earlier this year, was commemorated at Lingfield yesterday.

The EBF Paul Kelleway Memorial Classified Stakes was won by 8-13 favourite Selfish. Trainer Henry Cecil said later: ''Racing needs people like Paul. He was a great character, a fine trainer and a respected friend to me.''

Selfish, ridden by Kieren Fallon, led over a furlong out to score by three parts of a length from Parisien Star.

Cecil said of the winner: ''She has had her problems with joints, but is well bred. They went no pace and turned into a sprint and she really needs to be covered up.''

Cheveley Park entry Shafaq won on her debut in the Rydon Group Maiden Stakes, making virtually all to score in the hands of Richard Hills.

Hamdan Al Maktoum's filly had a bit of a battle with Don't Surrender in the closing stages, but triumphed by half a length in the end.

LS Lowry hung on by a neck at even money for Jimmy Fortune in the Orange Stakes from Fast And Neat. The Paul Cole-trained gelding hit the front a furlong and a half out but had a ding-dong battle with the runner-up.

Moon Shot easily won the Bob Gillingham Retirement Handicap, making all by seven lengths from Castles Burning to complete a double for Fortune.

Alison West, who looks after Moonshot at Sir Mark Prescott's stable, said: ''He cost 120,000 guineas as a yearling and is a half brother to the Triumph Hurdle winner Katarino.''
