I REALLY must take issue with Alan McCabe (February 3). I personally do not think that Land of Light is the song for Scotland but Billy Jackson has written a lovely song, a worthy addition to the Scottish musical canon.

My outrage comes from Mr McCabe's derogatory comments on Moira Anderson and Jean Redpath. I am not an expert on Moira Anderson's repertoire but as I recall she drew on a wide range of Scottish song and gave pleasure to many people over the years.

However, to apply the terms ''twee, sentimental, naffness'' to the incomparable Jean Redpath is almost sacrilegious! That unique voice and her interpretation of a huge range of Scottish traditional music make her a ''legend in her own lifetime'' to thousands of people in Scotland and throughout the world. Jean's main songwriter is one Robert Burns, so perhaps Billy Jackson should not be too worried about Mr McCabe's criticism!
