OXFAM is in the business of helping the needy the world over. Now one of its shops has added romantics to those in need.

It has given over one its windows exclusively to Valentine messages.

With St Valentine's Day on Sunday fast approaching, it is also proving an ideal scheme for earning the Glagsow shop extra money for charity.

The idea of letting people leave messages for one another was thought up by one of the volunteers in the charity shop. Another volunteer, Ms Hailey Banks, 26, is responsible for painting the messages on the shop window, in Byres Road.

Ms Banks, who is just back from Japan, where she taught English, helps out at the shop while she is looking for a permanent job.

She said: ''One of our volunteers, Judith Beard, came up with the idea. I said that I would paint the messages on the window. Each message takes a few minutes to paint on.

''We have had lots of different people coming in. There have been businessmen leaving messages for their wives, students leaving poems for one another as well as mums leaving notes for their kids. We have also had a couple of people, usually schoolkids leaving messages.''
