THOUSANDS of loaves have been cleared from supermarket shelves in Stornoway and dumped. The move follows an investigation by environmental health officers after complaints from customers of a strange, strong smell from their toast and sandwiches.

It emerged yesterday that disinfectant used by a ferry crew after a spillage before the bread lorry boarded a ferry at Ullapool is the likeliest cause. Ferry company Caledonian MacBrayne yesterday confirmed that it was still carrying out an inquiry to see if its disinfectant was behind the contamination.
