Crisis talks pledge over Ted Bates statue

SAINTS officials have pledged to hold crisis talks with the Ted Bates Trust after hundreds of supporters condemned the £112,000 statue of the club stalwart.

Since being unveiled outside St Mary's on Saturday night, scores of fans have flooded the Daily Echo website saying the 16ft statue is out of proportion and does not bear a strong enough resemblance to Bates, who gave the club 66 years of unbroken service.

Critics have likened the statue to 80s TV entertainer Jimmy Krankie, US president George Bush and even former Pompey owner Milan Mandaric. Representatives of the Ted Bates Trust, which commissioned the project, gave up countless hours to raise money towards the statue, which was sculpted by Saints fan Ian Brennan.

The final £10,000 was raised at an unveiling dinner on Saturday night attended by more than 450 guests and 30 former players.

After approaching Saints for help the club have agreed to meet with the Trust in the near future to see how the problem can be resolved.

Mr Brennan, who spent 18 months sculpting the statue before it was completed at the Bronze Age Sculpture Casting Foundry in London, said: "This was more than a commission, it was a passion. I am a Saints fan through and through and I am very sorry a number of supporters do not like the end result and I would be very happy to work with the Trust and club to resolve any issues."

Speaking on behalf of the Bates family, Ted's daughter Jackie said: "Dad's statue represents an artists impression of Ted. It was commissioned by the Trust with the club's support and if they feel it needs to be removed for further work, then we are perfectly happy for this to happen."

Mary Bates, the widow of the man known as Mr Southampton, unveiled the £112,000 statue on Saturday night in front of other family members, former players, club officials and fans.

Dave Ford, chairman of the Ted Bates Trust, which commissioned the project and shared the cost with the club, said: "Ian has done a tremendous job. It's very rare I'm lost for words but I saw the statue last week and it's awesome - a tremendous tribute to a great man.

"Fans have waited a long time for this and it's fantastic."

Ted Bates served Southampton FC for 66 years in several guises before his death in November 2003, at the age of 85.

He signed for the club as a teenage striker 60 years ago and formed a prolific partnership with Charlie Wayman before becoming a coach when his playing career ended in 1952.

Ted managed the club for 18 years before handing the reins to Lawrie McMenemy in 1973, but spent a further 20 years as a club director before stepping down in 1993.

In 1998, he received an MBE in recognition of his services to football and was made club president before being made a Freeman of the City of Southampton a year later.

A Fitting Tribute to a great man.

I suggest the current playing squad read 'Dell Diamond' and realise what the club meant to him, and what he made the club.

Everyone has total respect for Ted Bates but this statue is very poor. Its totally out of proportion and looks like a caricuture. It needs remedial work asap or should be taken down as its an embarrasment.

The statue is appaling, head all out of proportion, hands/wrists look completely wrong £112,000 utterly wasted. someones laughing all the way to the bank looks like the "artist" took the money and got one of his kids to make it!

1:43pm Sun 18 Mar 07

The statue of the great Ted Bates is a complete joke. It looks like Rupert has been kept busy by building the statue himself.

Its totally out of proportion, why has Teds head been built so big, and his legs are so small?

It looks like a joke and should be improved asap. Compare the statue to the likes of Bill Shankley etc it looks like ours was built by people doing community service.

Ryan, Hedge End says...

His Head his too big.

His arms too big.

His legs to small.

Its awful, whoever comissioned this should hang their heads in shame, it looks terrible and we are going to be a laughing stock!

Please take it down and re-do the whole thing straight away!

I've seen the pictures on the web - not, funnily enough on the Official Site or the Ted Bates Trust site - and the statue is absolutely terrible.

Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

A disgrace to the memory of the father of the club.

2:56pm Sun 18 Mar 07

A real shame. Ted was a great great man but this statue is woeful. It looks more like George Bush than it does Ted Bates. He looks like a cartoon. I'm so sorry Ted. :-(

LM, Blackfield says...
3:05pm Sun 18 Mar 07

What a disaster. This statue is not fit to grace St Mary's and is an insult to the memory of Ted Bates. As a fan who was more than pleased to contribute financially to this I feel badly let down. Take it down now before this great man becomes a cult figure for sniggering Pompey fans.

Tim, Southampton/London says...
3:14pm Sun 18 Mar 07

I drove past it today and i have to say i fel embarrassed by the statue. Sure i am sure the sculptor put a lot of work into it but it is totally out of proportion and it looks like a cartoon character. If we werem't already the laughing stock of the south coast we sure will be with this. Get it re-done ASAP!!!!

3:22pm Sun 18 Mar 07

The statue doesn't quite look right.

Danny, London says...
3:28pm Sun 18 Mar 07

Honestly, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw this insult to Ted. It truly is comical - totally out of proportion. What was the artist thinking, and did nobody check his work before it got too far? Or is this just a case of "The Emperors New Clothes"?

Whatever the reasons, it is makes us a laughing stock (again!) and tarnishes the memory of a Saints legend. It MUST come down ASAP and be remodelled.

My wife, who has no knowledge of the late, great Ted, when seeing a picture of it just burst out laughing and exclaimed "My God, it looks like a munchkin!".

It has to go, and go quickly.

James, Southampton says...

When you say 'Stand Tall' outside St Mary's you're joking right? It is so obviously not acceptable it's unbelievable. If there was not enough cash for the legs....we spent £4m on Rory Delap for god's sake!! Ted Bates deserves more.

Marcus, Bitterne says...

I was really hoping that the unvieling of the statue would raise the mood of the fans which has taken such a battering in recent weeks. A statement to the players and Supporters alike of what Southampton Football club is all about. Unfortunately this Tolkien-esque monstrosity only seems to be another chapter in the St Mary's Comedy Circus of recent times. My condolences to those at the Ted Bates trust who worked so hard to make this happen.

This is so heartbreaking and tragic to see. So many people were looking forward to seeing this tribute to a true legend, especially as we all need a lift in spirits considering everything that is going so wrong with Saints at the moment. I appreciate the undoubted effort that the Ted Bates Trust have put in but this result is an insult to the Ted Bates, his family and the club. Please get this monstrosity of an excuse of a statue removed asap and replaced with something resembling the quality of Sir Matt Busby at Old Trafford and Billy Bremner at Leeds. We really did not need this, it undermines us all and must be removed as soon as possible. I feel so sorry for Ted Bates's family.
This is not the time for finger pointing, please just remove it as quickly as possible.

Having seen the photos on the web I find the statue a complete and utter monstosity. The face bares no resemblance to Ted whatsoever and the body is that of some freak. It needs taken down and recommissioned from an artist who knows what he's doing. I can't believe this is what we get after such a long wait. Shame on Southampton for allowing this travesty to come about and shame the memory of a real gentleman and true Saint.

Hi,
I just wanted to say how terribly disapointed I am at the new statue of Ted bates. It is a shocking representation of this great man and what he has meant to this club. The face looks more like Milan Manderic than Ted. His right arm is out of proportion and seems to be made of rubber. The legs make him look like a midget. To see how a statue should be made of a great manager/player, see Man Utd, Leeds utd, Sunderland and Liverpool. This is an utter discrace to Ted Bates and SFC. I would like to know did anyone use quality control over the statue, and who gave the final go ahead for it to be cast? Tear it down. Away fans will laugh at this pathetic attempt to capture a legend. Tear it down now.

After waiting so long for this statue I was so excited on Saturday getting ready for the eagerly awaited unveiling and dinner. The dinner was a huge success and may I say congratulations and well done to all those involved. However, the statue itself is a sheer disappointment. I thought it may have been the light at last night's function, so I drove down today for another look and sad to say it looked even worse.

I took my mum with me, and she could not believe her eyes and was disgusted at such a terrible insult to such an amazing man, like we all are as it seems. I do feel empathy for all those who were involved in the raising of the monies and can only imagine that no one saw the statue in it's entirety before allowing it to go on display....this is definitely not what I was expecting and feel sad we have (yet again) become the laughing stock of all football fans around the country!

Everyone in football respected Ted Bates, he was not only a father figure for Southampton FC, but a true ambassador for game we all love.
In return for his lifelong work for the game he was honoured by a MBE.
Now Southampton FC have rewarded this paragon of loyalty and devotion with a statue outside our new stadium. Very fitting as Ted's hardwork and devotion was the prime reason the stadium was built in the first place. He played, coached and managed, a what was then, lowly 3rd Division club. His managment skills saw this club climb and establish itself in the very top division, and this club has lived on the back of his success since.
Since his death the club have slipped back, unfortunatley. But, even though we are struggling to get back to our former status, we have a lot to thank Ted for.
Yes, no other person from Southampton FC deserves to have a statue outside StMarys, than our beloved Ted.
An unseemly who pays what, and who should pay, row dogged this worthy tribute. But that controversy apart, it was deemed by all a fitting, and just reward to the debt owed to this man by all of us.
The long awaited statue was unveiled this weekend. Instead of fatherlike figure overlooking the stadium with dignity, we got a caricture so gross in it's conception, and creation that it makes our hero look ridiculous. We expected dignity, and got an insulting lump of scrap metal. It is embarrassingly disrespectful, and holds the great man up to ridicule.
The creator of this, note I don't say sculptor, should be thourghly ashamed. The person who allowed such a lump of expensive metal to be unveiled should be be sacked forthwith, and the club should issue an unreserved apology to Teds family, and to all of it's fans. Then the 'lump' should immeadiatly covered until it is removed. They don't even have to replace it, because they proved they can't even oversee such an important project, leave that to us fans.
The creator of this monstrous insult, should return all of his fee, then never show his face at the ground again.
To all those of you mocking Ted over this creation, remember although you may wish to take the micky out of this club, its board, and fans, dont mock the man, he deserves respect from everyone in the game, like Shankly, like Busby and the likes.

It's not in proportion and it looks more like Milan Mandaric.
It was a golden opportunity to leave a lasting tribute to someone who is up there with the likes of Shankly and Busby for the effect he has had on his football club. It's ended up a ghastly eye sore.
Please, please.... take it away...

Also there were some terrific wins back in those days over that lot down the road and the adrenaline pumping cup run during the big freeze of 1963 -plus the 65/66 Promtion to the top flight campaign. Now this SO CALLED WORK OF ART has Ted looking more like Bobby Robson than E.T.Bates. Perhaps it IS .. E.T. Tell yuh what. This is Ted Bates we are talking about here, someone who epitomises everything this club is. Art is always subjective but come on, make the thing look like the legend he is, this should be iconic but this is a sham.

Now I have had a chance to have a look at it I must say I am very disappointed. Ted's legs look too short and his face should be more life-like.

I was brought up with Ted Bates and gave donations towards the statue in memory of my Dad who saw his first Saints game in 1928 and was a great admirer of Ted. I do think steps should be taken to make the statue more realistic of how Ted looked.

That statue is of a man who means a lot to you and they go and put something like that up. Pathetic. At first I thought the BBC website and put up the wrong photo since I thought I was looking at Milan Mandaric. But no, it's no mistake. What the **** were they thinking. I know how I would feel if a statue of Jimmy D was put up outside FP and it looked like that. So today, I feel for you lot (genuinely)...what a disgrace.

dr.dolittle, says...
4:42pm Mon 19 Mar 07

There's a lot wrong with it.
the proportion is obviously wrong.
The resemblance is wrong.
More worryingly is that anyone who has watched sport would know that people don't hold a football at arms length with a straight arm.
I'm not sure the sculpter can get it right next time either, surely he's done his best, and if that'best' has to be returned for modification to the faults in it, how is he going to acheive that, he can't be better than his best can he?.
I wonder if this is a case of the Emperors New Clothes, where everyone involved on the comittee was too scared to say what they actually felt about it when it was a work in progress?
I say give the rework to the chap a few posts above me.

I think many of the fans have been a bit insensitive with some harsh comments but I do agree it is not a good piece. It sorrows me to say it, as I know the sculptor has put in many hours into this prestigious project.

The proportions look wrong which, I believe, any professional sculptor should have noticed. The likeness is not great and the hands, head and upper body seem out of proportion whereas the legs and feet look too small. It looks top heavy. It's a shame, especially considering the cost.

I can't see the problem being resolved since you can't extend the statue or add to it. Maybe I am wrong. However, being a Saints statue, you couldn’t expect it to go well. It’s following in the clubs footsteps though, disappointing and a let down to the fans. Sorry Ian, but I’m not enamored with the sculpture.

Gordon Mockles, Southampton says...
5:36pm Mon 19 Mar 07

I forgot to add, to gain a sense of scale of the inaccuracy, hold a football in front of your head. In this case, the ball is much smaller than his head. Unless he had a head bigger than John Merrick (which I don't recall him having!), I believe this should be obvious. I read Ian's comments on the ball (which had shrunk after cooling) which gave a realistic look but I disagree. I wouldn't be so rude as to say he'd just accepted the end result of a mistake but surely he would realise this and have another try making the ball and everything in proportion to each other.

Surely this shows that he himself knew it wasn't quite right. so shouldn't we be asking why it was allowed to be unveiled when the sculptor himself didn't think it was ready. it's the clubs fault for giving it the go ahead, which not only insults ted an his loyal fans, but it insults mr brennan who usually produces such a high quality of work. if you google him and take a look at his website you will see that he is no ameteur.

I am a Carlisle fan and we recently erected a statue of living legend Hugh McIlmoyle outside our ground. The statue perfecty captures Hughie executing one of his trademark headers (complete with correctly-sized ball) and was thus a far more difficult pose to sculpt than the simple standing portrait of Ted Bates attempted here. I can't imagine that our statue cost anything like what yours did. I have no idea what Ted Bates looked like and I am confident that having seen the statue, I still don't. I am shocked by the amateurish bungling of the proportions. I would seriously recommend that your trust or club officials get in touch with Carlisle United and ask who sculpted our McIlmoyle statue. I have just been looking at the Trust's website, all the enthusiasm and hard work that went into the project, all the excitement about the mounting donations over months and months and the build-up to the unveiling and now this. My heart sinks when I look at that terrible statue, I feel so dreadfully embarrassed and sorry for everyone involved. What an awful mess has resulted from all those good intentions. It seems clear that Trust members must have had a look at the statue as it progressed (there are pictures of it in progress on the website) and I imagine they just didn't feel able to question the artist or didn't want to face up to the reality that the project was going horribly wrong. If the artist is a Southampton fan and possibly known personally to some of the trust then it is easy to see how difficult it must have been for anyone to express any serious reservations. I feel there is no alternative than for the statue to be removed as soon as possible. I hope that the artist is financially able to return at least a portion of his fee and that we are able to commission a replacement which does justice to Ted and which we can all be proud of. As indicated above, other clubs have good statues so it should not be hard to find a replacement artist.

So many people will be compelled to make pilgrimages just to have their photos taken next to the statue that Southampton tourism is likely to increase 4-fold overnight.

18 months work! when?, after the pub!

I've just driven down to see it and I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
I feel sorry for the artist as he's obviously done his best.
Surely whoever was in charge of managing the project and quality control should be to blame. Have a look at Middlesborough FC's fantastic statue complete with fountain that they got for 90K.

As for the statue itself, sadly it has been so poorly executed as to defy belief and opinion seems to be unanimous on that, not "split" as suggested in some parts of the media. I do feel sorry for everyone concerned, including the trust and the artist himself to a certain extent. I do feel the artist should do the decent thing and hand back as much of his fee as he can afford so that a different artist can be commissioned to make a replacement.

I would be interested to learn about the selection process for this 'sculptor'. Was he among a number of artists considered and
their previous work researched? Who made the final decision to commission him or was it a committee decision ? Was an independent art consultant appointed to guide them on commissioning the right person and ensuring this huge sum of money was spent on a proper and fitting tribute?
Whoever it was and however the artist was chosen, it will prove to be a monumental and costly mistake.

I must admit that it looks odd. The legs are too short, the arms too big and the head is on the large side. It also looks a much better likeness of the pompey chairman milan than it does ted bates! Back to the drawing board!

the statue is fantastic, it is true art, as the artist see`s it, it makes not one shred of sense,to critise the masterpiece, the masses have never appreciated real art or come anywhere near to understanding artistic genius,
stuff the prolitariate, long live free art,
all football fans are working class scum, & will live for ever in their working class ghetto`s

I knew nothing of Ted Bates, but having now read a few lines about his divotion to Southampton, i can only say how lucky Southampton were to have had such a dedicated man in the club. The football leagues need more people like that.
The statue is crap however.

Sorry to hear its been taken down. It was just so funny, I woke up laughing during the night. How about it being put on a tour around the country collecting for charity. National society for the protection of dwarves maybe :)

You\\\'re a fine one to mention \\\'embarrassing\\\', \\\'insulting\\\' and \\\'dignity\\\'. I recall the minutes \\\'silence\\\' in memory of Ted bates that your \\\'sorry shower\\\' wrecked in the presence of this great mans grieving family. It was so appalling that it had to be repeated at the Charlton game the follwing Saturday. Now there\\\'s something \\\'truly embarrassing\\\'.
P.S. We went on to hammer you in that game too.
Can i just point out... The Pompey Fans were NOT making any noise in the ground at Ted Bates minutes silence . I was there and i am an embarrased Saints Fan who witnessed. a few \"Late arrival Pompey Fans\" singing on there way into the stadium, unaware there was a minutes silence. Other Pompey Fans said SSSHHH and they did SSSHHH. But our OWN SAINTS FANS were the ones then making all the noise in reply to the Pompey Fans error. I was impressed with theor fans that night , and disappointed in our owm
I was there too from the blue side. i remember exactly the same. one or two made a noise as they were coming in but it was generally good silence - i'd heard worse. saints fans caught the slightest noise and went ballistic, assuming it was intentional. it just escalated badly from there, and was a real shame.

funniest statue i've ever seen by the way.

I normally do not approve of seeking to belittle people when they bravely attempt to express themselves through art, but what the friggin' **** is that meant to be?

Of all the Ted Bates pictures and sculptures I received on my time on television I never saw something quite that hideous.

No matter how big the head is, I'm sure it could still fit up Rupert Lowe's backside.

I've been a passionate Saints supporter since the late 60's. Never in my life have I laughed so much. Yes, the statue is hidious and the people who sanctioned this monstrosity should be certified but c'mon! Time for a reality check.

It can be re-commissioned. The funds should be available. Surely the 'sculptor' - an avid Saints fan, would have the decency to reimburse his fee (or if it hasn't yet been paid, stop it altogether)

Some of the comments have been hilarious and the person that coined the phrase "TOULOUSE LE TED" should be given a season ticket for life. Priceless!!!

I had my doubts about LUFC's Billy Bremner tribute but I have never seen a funnier-looking wee fella than this statue of Ted Bates. Weird alien hands, huge head, tiny little legs... I cried with laughter when I first saw it and am still laughing now. I think Ian Brennan should be given the commission the next time the Queen wants a new statue doing, especially if he has to do something tricky like putting her on a horse or something.

This happens so often in the UK.
There are even dreadful statues dotted around our capital city.
There are plenty of first rate portrait sculptors in this country who would have loved to sculpt the figure for you and need the work!
With someone so important to the club and with 'proper' money available, they should have really looked for a professional.
Sincerely
Lazlo Benares
