VICTORIA falls of the dry kind will occupy the minds of 12 Scottish

wrestlers today as they battle for places in the Scotland squad for the

Commonwealth Games, to be staged in Victoria, British Columbia, in

August.

The Scots take to the mat for the British championships at Lancing, in

Sussex, and a medal placing is almost essential to ensure they make the

team, though there will be a final chance at the Scottish championships

on May 28 at the Kelvin Hall.

The sport has been allocated six Games places, but squad manager Sandy

McNeil reckons that the squad could finish with a record eight gold or

silver medals this weekend.

McNeil's two sons, British Olympian Calum -- moving up to the 74 kilos

class -- and Gregor -- dropping down to 68k -- are competing. Team:

52 kilos: D Connelly. 57k: P Nedley, D Marshall. 62k: J Breen, K

Devoy. 68k: G McNeil, S McKeown. 74l: C McNeil. 82k: T Watson, G

Neilson. 90k: G English. 10k: D Thomson.

* THERE is a backhold (traditional style) competition at Drumchapel

Sports Centre today. The Drumchapel Team Challenge features squads from

Glasgow, Greenock, Cumbria A and B, Lancashire, and Northumberland from

1.0pm.
