FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a blaze at a hotel in Southampton.

Five crews have rushed to the Premier Inn in New Road after a fire started in a fourth floor bedroom.

They are currently still on the scene where some people attempting to check in at the hotel were being told they will have to move to another hotel in the city.

Diane Burgess was due to stay there with her five sisters for the weekend. She said: "It's all quite dramatic. We got here to book in and saw fire engines outside and have just been told that we are going to have to go to another hotel.

"I don't think anyone is hurt thankfully."

Diane told how she and her siblings had chosen to spend the weekend in Southampton as part of a reunion as they used to live here.

She now lives in Cardiff and had made the journey this morning and were set to stay until Sunday.

Staff at the hotel were organising alternative accomodation for the group who then left in a taxi with their luggage.

Two fire engines were initially at the scene, one of which left around 12.45pm. Two police cars are also now parked outside the hotel.

In a statment, Premier Inn told the Daily Echo: "Please be assured that our team are working as quickly and safely as possible to ensure our guests are well looked after."
