DRIVERS are being warned to expect hours of delays after a lorry became wedged under a Hampshire railway bridge.

Traffic has been disrupted following an incident involving the bridge that carries the Brockenhurst to Lymington branch line over the busy A337.

Lymington police have tweeted: “Lorry has hit railway bridge - delays are likely for the next few hours.”

A Network Rail spokesman said trains were running normally but drivers were being urged to slow down on the bridge, resulting in slight delays.

Engineers are on their way to inspect the structure and carry out any repairs that are needed.

It is the latest in a series of incidents involving the arch, which is next to Ampress Business Park on the northern edge of Lymington.

Two months ago commuters faced long delays after a lorry struck the bridge. Part of the vehicle was left lying in the road, with the driver directing traffic around it.

A similar accident occurred in May 2013 when a three-tonne Mercedes lorry carrying insulation material became wedged under the bridge.

Trains were suspended and bus services diverted via Pilley, resulting in delays of up to 25 minutes.
