MUMS will be able to breastfeed in public without being judged thanks to a new scheme.

Southampton will officially become a Breastfeeding Welcome city where mums feeding their children naturally will get a warm welcome from venues.

It comes after cases of mums facing negative reactions from breastfeeding their children in public have hit headlines across the country.

More than 80 venues across the city have already signed up to the initiative by Southampton City Council and the National Childbirth Trust which aims to promote positive, supportive, public breastfeeding opportunities for mums who choose to breastfeed their children.

Mums are invited to the launch at the Southampton Civic Centre on Monday, May 11 from 10.30am until 11.30am where they can breastfeed their children comfortably and share their experiences.

A spokesman, said: “There has been much debate in recent months, with social media and public opinion rife about public breastfeeding.

“In Southampton, breastfeeding mothers will no longer face the ‘stigma’ or associated negativity from establishments if they need to feed their baby while out and about, due to the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme.”

The scheme is voluntary, requires no funding and no changes to the facilities available, but is instead a commitment to a change of attitude towards breastfeeding.

Businesses who sign up to the scheme will present a sticker on their door to demonstrate they are Breastfeeding Welcome, and agree to abide by a short set of ‘rules’ for supporting mums to feed their babies in a comfortable and non-judgemental environment which include pledging not to ask mums to move or stop.
