TWO people have been taken to hospital after a fire engine collided with a car in Southampton.

The fire service say a 62-year-old woman in the car is in a "potentially serious condition" after the crash yesterday afternoon.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue say the engine was on its way to respond to an automatic fire alarm at Southampton General Hospital, and an investigation has been launched.

The vehicles collided at the junction of Raymond Road and Malmesbury Road in Shirley at about 12.05pm.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "A fire appliance from St Mary's was responding to an automatic fire alarm at Southampton General Hospital just after 12.05pm today  when it was in collision with a car at the junction of Malmesbury Road and Raymond Road in Southampton.

"A female passenger, aged 62, was extricated from the car and taken to hospital by South Central Ambulance Service. She is said to be in a potentially serious condition. The male driver, 61, suffered only minor injuries and accompanied the female to hospital. The crew on the fire appliance were not injured.

"Officers from HFRS are assisting police with their investigation and our own internal investigation is also underway."

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said two ambulances and a hazardous response team were called to the scene, and two people were treated and taken to Southampton General Hospital.
