IT IS a hotly contested battle that it looking to set the bar high.

Pupils from Berrywood Primary School in Hedge End are celebrating the year of the sunflower with a competition to see who can grow the tallest flower.

Haskins West End Garden Centre has supplied the youngsters with their seeds and now it is up to them to giving them the tender loving care they need to flourish.

The flowers have been planted within the school grounds and store manager Peter Callaway will be back later in the summer to present the school with a £50 gift card and a £25 gift card to the overall grower of the tallest sunflower.

Mr Callaway said: “The competition is part of our science and enterprise tuition within the curriculum. Not only will the pupils sow and care for their seeds they may well opt to sell their sunflowers.”
