YOUNGSTERS put their greenfingers to the test and spruced up their city.

A team of 14 junior neighbourhood wardens took part in a gardening project to brighten up a city street.

The seven to 12-year-olds, along with two teenage team leaders, spent an afternoon planting a new flowerbed at Bransbury Close in Coxford.

Junior warden co-ordinator Ian Mitchell said: “We had a good turn out and the weather was lovely. We did a 40-metre flower bed along the front of the flats in Bransbury Close.

“It’s completely transformed the front of the building. We put in some evergreen plants to brighten up the flats all year round.”

The junior wardens come together for events during every school half-term break where they help clean up the area, remove graffiti and paint murals, fences and park equipment. They are led by a team of 14 to 18-year-olds who also take part in monthly meetings to discuss what needs to be done in their areas.

The project was part of four days of work being undertaken across Southampton by junior wardens.
