A MUSIC cabinet made by Charles Rennie Mackintosh that lay undisturbed in a garage for years has sold for £36,000 at auction.

The furniture was taken to Robertsons of Kinbuck near Dunblane by a woman who had inherited it from her grandmother.

It was bought at a Dumfries saleroom in the 1950s, but was only discovered to be authentic Mackintosh after research into its history.

The architect designed the cabinet for a Mrs Pickering of Braxfield, Lanark, in 1898, and a watercolour design he made is held by the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow.

A spokesman for Robertsons said: "It is nice to have the opportunity to sell something that would normally be sold by one of the larger salerooms in a bigger city."
