A SOUTHAMPTON man will be stepping back in time for a gruelling charity bike ride with a difference Stuart Mason-Elliott, from Highfield, is gearing up to ride 500 miles from Paris to the outskirts of the French town of Avignon – on an original velocipede – which was better known as “the boneshaker.”
The ride is in aid of Cancer Research UK and will see the 63-year-old who is chairman of building merchants Elliots, as the only British member of a team of seven cyclists.
The challenge will also commemorate the first long journey in the history of bike riding which saw the Rene Oliver and his brother Aime and their friend Georges de la Bouglise cycle to their family home in Pontet on the outskirts of Avignon in eight days.
It takes place from August 8 to 23.
