POLICE have named a man who died after a crash between two boats in the Solent.

Ryan Scott McKinlay, 36, was a passenger on a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) in Osborne Bay of the Isle of Wight when it collided with a larger motorboat at about 5pm on Friday.

The Gosport resident, pictured, was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries that evening and a post-mortem will now take place.

The RIB was being carried by the larger motorboat earlier in the day and police are keen to establish how the collision occured.

The Daily Echo understands people on board the motorboat made a mayday call after the incident.

Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) were first on the scene and arrived to discover people on the motorboat attempting to revive an unconscious man.

A GAFIRS medic began treating the man at the scene before the coastguard arrived and the casualty was airlifted to St Mary’s Hospital on the Isle of Wight.

Mike Allen, vice chairman of operations at GAFIRS, said: “We carry an oxygen kit and a defibrillator and we took over giving CPR from the members of the public, and carried on doing CPR until the coastguard arrived on the scene.

“The man was winched up onto the helicopter and taken to St Mary’s Hospital on the Isle of Wight, and as soon as he was taken away then the team turned their attentions into a second person who had suffered head and chest injuries and lacerations.

“The injuries were fairly significant and he was taken to the landings at Cowes and went to hospital by ambulance."

A Cowes RNLI spokesman said it is thought about 12 people were on the motorboat and after the rescue they were taken to the lifeboat station to recover while some decided to go to hospital.

South West Ambulance Service and Hampshire Constabulary were also involved in the incident and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch has made initial inquiries to police.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said the man's next of kin have been informed and that there is no information to suggest any suspicious circumstances.

Anyone with information or who saw the collision between 4.45pm and 5pm on Friday is asked to contact Hamphire Constabulary on 101.
