A MAN has been jailed for raping a young woman and trying to rob a good Samaritan who came to her aid.

Shumel Anamul Ahmed, 21, of Portswood Road, Southampton has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to rape and assault with intent to rob.

He was caught after returning to the scene of the crime a few hours later - because he wanted to collect his hat which he lost during the attack.

The attack happened on Portswood Road in the city.

Detective Sergeant Paul Harrison, said: “During the early hours of Thursday, February 26, 2015 Shumel Anamul Ahmed followed his 19-year-old victim when she was walking home after a night out in Southampton. She became aware of him following her.

“When she thought he had gone, she tried to make her way home, but Ahmed was waiting. During the incident, she managed to get the attention of a passerby by shouting for help. “The passerby, an 18-year-old man, confronted the Ahmed.

"Ahmed assaulted him and tried to steal his phone and wallet. However, in the meantime, the victim was able to make her escape.

“A few hours after the incident, Ahmed returned to the scene; we believe he was there to try and retrieve his hat which he had left there. The officer guarding the scene noticed that he matched the description of the offender, and had a number of injuries to his face and hands, as well as having mud on his clothes. Ahmed was arrested and subsequently charged.

“The bravery and courage of the victim has been paramount in securing this conviction. Understandably this has been a traumatic time for her; but with the support of specially trained officers from our Amberstone team, she has worked with us to help us preserve and collate evidence which has put this man behind bars.

“The length of this prison sentence reflects the gravity of this crime.

“I would also like to commend the actions of the brave young man who intervened during this incident, allowing the victim time to escape. The man was assaulted by the offender, but fought him off and then alerted the police.
