NO-ONE knows fun quite as well as Pat Sharp.

So Southampton can look forward to a “whole lotta fun” this weekend when the legendary king of Fun House descends on the city with his army of 80’s acts to get the Common jumping.

Let’s Rock Southampton is the finale of the six-date 80’s tour around the country and the presenter, who proudly modelled one of the most famous mullets of the decade, is determined to make sure it goes off with a bang.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Pat said: “It’s the big finale for Let’s Rock this year and it is going to be fantastic.

“Southampton Common is a great venue and when you are backstage you see people on their bicycles enjoying the park, it is a lovely down there. So we are really looking forward to it.”

Pat is no stranger to the south coast, having worked on what was formerly Jack FM and now Sam FM, as well as working with Red Funnel, and he is delighted to be back.

He said: “I know Southampton quite well so it’s great to be back.

“I like anything by the coast and the fact that just a few miles down the road you can jump on a boat and you are on the Isle of Wight is great - it just feels like a holiday town to me.”

Just like last year, the festival has a jammed packed line-up full of 80’s greats, including Jimmy Sommerville, Nik Kershaw and T’Pau, but for Southampton, there is a rare treat.

Pat explains: “Alexander O’Neil is very rare on this line-up, I think he has done maybe just one other venue, so he will do a good show and I am looking forward to seeing him.”

But for Pat, it is one of the lesser known artists due to perform that has become the surprise hit of the Let’s Rock music extravaganza and he is urging everyone to make sure they don’t miss it.

“One of the best acts is Jive Bunny”, Pat revealed. “They all come on stage with graphics on the massive screens, dancers, with costume changes and a giant bunny - it really gets everybody going. The DJ set is absolutely amazing, really uplifting, with clips with some of the best songs.

“But all of the acts are good and it is a really nice atmosphere, especially as all the acts know each other because they have been working alongside each other for 30 years.”

The former I’m a Celebrity star will be hosting the whole 12-hour set, which is expected to draw in a 12,000-strong crowd, making sure everything goes as planned.

He will be sharing the stage with another favourite from 80’s children’s television Dave Benson Phillips, who, Pat revealed, was one of the people who originally auditioned for the Fun House job.

Asked if that has caused any bad feeling between the pair, Pat added: “No we are good friends. He ended up getting his own show, Get Your Own Back – it wasn’t quite as popular as Fun House but I don’t think any show was quite as popular as Fun House. It just did so well.”

Fun House is obviously a topic of conversation that Pat faces quite a lot, even though the show first aired on CITV back in 1989.

Daily Echo:

He famously fronted the gameshow, with the help of twin cheerleaders, Melanie and Martina, which became a massive hit and saw it run for ten years.

The popularity and success of the show is such that the trio recently reunited for a live version of the show.

But Pat feels honoured to have played such a big part in so many people's childhoods and says that he never gets tired of talking to fans about the show.

He added: “I will take that every day of the week when people come up to me and say ‘I loved this from my childhood’ and that for some it made their childhoods. It’s great. I don’t think kids are getting that thrill today - that type of television is just not around.”
