PART of a Hampshire school’s grounds have been transformed from a flood-hit marsh into a new playground.

The new facility at Hazel Wood Infant School in Totton has been opened and is set to be followed by water play equipment.

The plans were launched last year, after flooding affected one area of the school grounds, and were helped to become a reality by a £1,000 grant from the Barker-Mill Foundation.

The organisation funded some of the work after the school's Friends group was hit with an extra £10,000 bill for ground improvements.

Lisa Vail, from the Friends, said: “The donation from the Barker-Mill Foundation is great news for our parents, teachers and pupils. It will make a huge difference and it’s a big step towards hitting our fundraising target. We’re very grateful for the support.”

The wooden “pick up sticks” play facility is set to be joined by New water play equipment also may be installed by next Easter.

Barker-Mill Foundation Trustee Tim Jobling said: “The play project looks an amazing addition for the school and its pupils, so when we heard about the funding challenge Hazel Wood was facing we were delighted to help out.”
