THE songwriter behind a 90s chart topper, who reached the final stages of the recently televised Celebrity Masterchef is coming to Winchester for an evening exploring his musical journey.

Chesney Hawkes, whose single The One and Only spent five weeks at number one in the UK singles chart in 1991, will host The Songwriters' Circle at The Railway next month.

He will perform his own songs, collaborations with other artists and a few personal favourites.

His father Chip Hawkes was the singer in 1960s band The Tremeloes.

Chesney’s own career started aged 19 when he appeared as the title character in the film Buddy’s Song. He went on to smash the singles chart in 1991, followed by a string of singles and collaborations including Another Fine Mess in 2006 with Nik Kershaw.

The culmination of three years’ work, it was a collection of 16 songs all co-written by Chesney except for one track, Come and Get It, a Chesney favourite which was written by Paul McCartney and originally recorded by Badfinger.

Support for the Winchester gig, on August 14, comes from Mark Read from pop-band A1 and musical south coast duo Percival Elliot whose sound echoes Parachutes, Grace and Abbey Road.

Olly Hite and Samuel Carter-Brazier have captivated audiences throughout Los Angles, Hollywood and the UK with their neo-nostalgic melodies.

Opening the shows on the mini-tour is Anthony Starble, whose creates an environment for uncomfortable truths to be heard with his emotional vocal style.

The Songwriters' Circle is an over-18s event and tickets cost £10.
