Following months of fundraising after Saints legend Francis Benali's epic 1000 mile run to all 20 football grounds in the Premier League - the final amount has finally been calculated.

Friends, family and the team at Cancer Research UK gathered at Southampton General Hospital at the Somers Cancer Research Building to mark the occasion in style.

The final figure for Benali's Big Run was £265,000 which will all go to the charity's vital work.

The gruelling run him brake down on several occasions as the heavy miles took their toll on him both mentally and physically, as he covered nearly 50 miles each day for 21 days.

But despite the aches and pains, he kept going and he was supported every step of the way by his family, friends and even former team mates.

He crossed the finish line in spectacular style, as he jogged into St Mary's stadium to a rapturous applause by Saints fans at the club's 4-0 victory over Newcastle in September 2014.

It was a fitting and emotional finale, but for Benali the fundraising effort continued well after the run was finished.

Each shirt collected from each Premier League football club were sold to raise money for the charity, which culminated in a special gala dinner at St Mary's Stadium back in March where many were auctioned off.

The others were sold on Ebay and others auctioned on the Benali's Big Run website.

Benali, said: "It is quite overwhelming to know the generosity of everybody making those donations and the support I have received from friends and family and the support team is incredible."

"When you reflect on a challenge and see what you manage to raise and the experience I have had as well, it has been almost life changing."

Senior local fundraising manager Shelley Davies, said: "From Cancer Research UK and from me personally it is an absolutely amazing amount of money that Francis has raised.

"He worked really hard and the challenge was really tough at times and people just came out to support him from all over the country.

"We are extremely lucky to be able to use that money towards our life changing science."
