MORE than 100 bikers descended on Southampton city centre tonight for what could be the first of many regular meetings.

The Southampton Bike Night saw about 120 bikers from Southampton, Hampshire and as far away from Poole meet at the Bargate monument.

It was organised by Mark Holman from Nursling and saw vehicles ranging from 50cc learners to prize-winning custom-bikes line up in front of the historic monument.

The event was organised by Mark Holman and was designed to be a continuation of the old Mayflower Bike Night event.

The 45-year-old from Nursling, who runs advertising consultancy Bow and Arrow, said: "I think it's important to bring the kids in, I think that was well as being a good social event it can encourage them to bike responsibly and maybe we can save some lives further down the line as well.

"The Mayflower Bike Nights were organised because the perception of motorcyclists was quite poor and we just wanted to show that we're normal people.

"I think as a result we have become a much stronger community in Southampton."

The event was timed to coincide with the thirteenth birthday of Jordan Redding, whose dad Darren, 48, is a biker from Swaythling.

Mr Holman continued: "We all get together and support each other, it's not just funeral rides it's for birthdays and when there is special case we come together.

"There was a good turnout and it was a good start for something hopefully."
