STUDENT Sophie Smith will be one of dozens of people swapping their comfy beds for some hard, cold concrete to highlight the problem of homelessness amongst under-25s in the UK.

The 20-year-old from Woolston, pictured, will be braving the chilly night air to take part in the Society of St James Sleep Out at St Mary’s Church on November 12.

Sophie, a who is studying psychology and criminology at Brighton University, said: “I’ve seen my friends doing fundraising things but I’ve never done anything before and I thought this would be a really good cause.”

The sponsored sleep-out is one of around 15 taking place in the country on the same night as part of the Centre Point campaign End Youth Homelessness.

Last year around 50 bedded down in their sleeping bags in Guildhall Square and raised £11,000 for the Society of St James, which supports around 250 homeless people under the age of 25.

The charity hopes 100 will take part in 2015’s sleep out – there is a registration fee of £25 but it’s only £10 for those who sign up before September 1.

The Society promises the first half of the evening at least should be fun with with hot food delivered by the the Sikh Community Hampshire van and music from Southampton Ukulele Jam between 7pm and 11pm.
