LAST-GASP hero Lee Cook emerged from the bench to win a fiercely contested Hampshire derby 2-1 for Eastleigh at Aldershot’s EBB Stadium this afternoon.

The game had appeared to be heading for a draw after Charlie Walker’s 64th-minute goal for the hosts had cancelled out James Constable’s first-half strike - a fifth goal in six outings for the prolific Spitfires’ hitman.

Ex-Oxford United man Constable had been the game’s central figure prior to his breakthrough effort, writes Paul McNamara.

A 20th-minute Spitfires’ penalty shout, after Constable had gone over Omar Beckles’ leg in the hosts’ box, was ignored by referee Chris Powell.

Then, seven minutes later, the striker’s touch failed him when he was well placed to shoot and Shots’ centre-half Luke Oliver nipped in to intercept.

There was no stopping Constable on 34 minutes, however.

Andy Drury scooped a ball forward, which Jai Reason, under heavy pressure, helped on for his striker. Constable applied a wonderfully dexterous touch to lift his finish up and over home No1 Phil Smith and inside the stopper’s right-hand post.

The home team only had Jack Saville’s 31st-minute header, clawed out from inside his right upright by Eastleigh' keeper Michael Poke, to show for their first-half efforts.

The Spitfires, though, had assumed a measure of control and Reason went close to extending his side’s lead with a sumptuous long-range shot from distance six minutes before the interval.

Aldershot’s leveller arrived when Rhys Browne collected a short corner to cut back for Charlie Walker, whose close-range effort crashed home off the underside of the bar.

The goal emboldened the home team and, with just two minutes to play, Drury and Dan Harding combined to prevent Jim Stevenson from pouncing on Shots’ sub Tom Richards’ cross from the left.

Cook, sent on for Reason in the 78th minute, would have the final say in stoppage time, however -and in spectacular fashion to boot.

The former Barnet winger moved onto a Joe Partington pass, drifted in from the right and unleashed a left-foot drive that skidded across the turf and past Smith’s outstretched right glove.

Eastleigh’s unbeaten start to the season continues, moving them up to third with four wins and two draws from six matches.

They host Torquay United on Monday (3pm).
