IT WAS a life changing moment that they will never forget.

And now Hampshire-based DJ Jef Powell is behind a rock-and-roll evening at Braishfield, near Romsey, to raise funds for the hospital that saved his wife’s life.

Jef will be joined at Sunday’s fundraiser by rock-and-roll singer Si Cranstoun, whose record Dynamo helped to stir Cheryl from a deep coma after she suffered a heart attack.

“We wanted to say thank you to the team at Wessex cardiac unit at Southampton General Hospital that saved her life,” said 53-year-old Jef, from the couple’s home in North Baddesley.

“She was extremely grateful for the treatment she received. It was first class. Without the staff’s dedicated care Cheryl would not be here today.

“They were amazing.”

Cheryl, pictured with Jef below, suffered the near fatal heart attack at her Romsey home in November 2013.

Daily Echo:

Luckily for Cheryl her daughter Jemma, who was at home, performed CPR on her until paramedics arrived.

She was then taken to Southampton General’s cardiac unit where she was put in an induced coma by specialist doctors.

Jef added: “They said this was the best way to help her recover.

“We were told at the time that Cheryl had a 50 per cent chance of recovering and warned that she probably would not be her old self if she survived.”

He said the big breakthrough came when daughter Jemma put some headphones on Cheryl and played Si Cranstoun’s song Dynamo.

Jef, who wasn’t married to Cheryl at the time, said: “The monitoring equipment on Cheryl was set off and she stirred from her coma.

“It was slow progress and after two or three days she was conscious.

“Si Cranstoun got to hear about it and he immediately agreed to help raise money for the ward at Southampton General Hospital where Cheryl was treated.”

Cheryl, who was fitted with a tiny defibrillator to kick-start her heart if it stops again, has been helping Jef arrange Sunday’s fundraiser at Braishfield Social Club, where Si Cranstoun and his band will be making a special appearance.

Before her life-changing experience Cheryl was a nurse at Poole Hospital in Dorset.

“We’d just booked a holiday and our wedding in Vegas a couple of weeks before it all happened in November 2013 and we got married in September the following year,” added Jef, who is hoping the fundraiser will raise thousands of pounds for the Wessex Heartbeat charity.

He added: “We plan to raise at least £1,000 for the hospital.”

Sunday’s events start at 2pm with a vintage fair at Braishfield Social Club and when it ends at 6pm the rock-and-roll show will begin.

This is scheduled to finish at 10.30pm.

Tickets for the rock 'n' roll show are still available and they cost £15 each.
