HAMPSHIRE residents are being warned to lock their doors and windows after a spate of burglaries across the county which has seen precious jewellery stolen.

In recent weeks officers have received eight reports where thieves have tried breaking into detached homes in Fareham, Locks Heath and Hill Head, using tools to force uPVC doors and windows.

Once inside the raiders have been targeting smaller items which can be carried out, such as jewellery and cash.

At one address in Silver Birch Avenue, two men seen acting suspiciously last Friday night, broke into a house.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen these men, at around 9.30pm, to come forward as they could hold vital clues to other attempts in the area since July.

Police have said it is unclear whether all these burglaries are linked but officer are investigating the possibility and have priorities patrols in the area.

As part of the investigation police would like to speak to anyone who has been offered a number of distinctive items of jewellery for sale.

Items stolen in recent weeks include a silver four leaf clover broach with pearls on it, which was taken from a home on Short Road, in Hill Head.

An 18-carat gold engagement ring with a sapphire and a diamond on each side, which was taken from a Crawford Drive home, in Fareham.

And a 22-carat plain gold wedding ring with an inscription on the inside featuring two names and the date 29.8.70, which was taken from a Crescent Road home, in Locks Heath.

As a result officers are now warning residents to properly lock any uVPC doors and windows in a bid to prevent further break-ins.

Tips on keeping the thieves out include not leaving keys in the doors, if you are upstairs, lock everything downstairs and if you are away ask a friend or neighbour to check regularly.
