ROMSEY has paid tribute to volunteers in the community.

Volunteers around the area were recognised at Celebrating Community - during a special two-day event at Romsey Abbey last weekend to honour people who do hours of unpaid work in the town and neighbouring villages.

Groups and organisations in the community had stalls at the event was organised by Liz Hallett from Romsey Abbey.

Mrs Hallett said it was really inspiring to see how many different ways people give their time and expertise to help others.

“As far as the Abbey is concerned, we feel this is a really important part of what we are here for and we are so very pleased to welcome these groups each time we hold this event. I was impressed at the wide range of needs which were highlighted by the different groups, and also delighted that each year new groups come and join us and share with us what they do,” said Mrs Hallett.

Numerous organisations were present on both days and these included groups who provide support to people with various medical conditions, those associated with disadvantaged children and their families and groups supporting the elderly and charities fighting hunger.

Mrs Hallett said the star of the show was a guide dog named Brunel who was Guide Dog of the Year in 2012.

“Brunel brought his owner, Mr Tom McInulty, representing the Macular Peer Support Group, with him to demonstrate what an important role he plays in his master’s life.

Many people came to look around and some new volunteers were enrolled. An event such as this tries to raise awareness of what volunteers can offer, information which may prove very useful at some time in the future as well as now,” added Mrs Hallett.
