ANIMAL lovers across Hampshire are being urged to put their best foot forward to help vulnerable pets.

Southampton animal shelter Blue Cross has launched a major initiative in a bid to create a happier future for pets in need.

The organisation has created the campaign Steps for Pets, asking people to lace up their boots, put on their dancing shoes, trainers or wellies next month.

The charity, based in West End, is asking supporters to walk, run, dance, hop, skip or even climb to help reach the target of 10 million sponsored steps to raise money for thousands of sick and homeless pets in rehoming centres and animal hospital across the UK.

Danielle Mason, rehoming centre manager at Southampton Blue Cross, said: “The great thing about Steps for Pets is that absolutely anyone can take part and there are so many ways you can do your steps. You can count your steps while you’re at work like we’ll be doing here, at school, out walking the dog or even running around after your kids all day - it couldn’t be easier. And if you feel like a little bit more of a challenge you could sign up for a 5k run or maybe organise a Zumbathon with your friends.”

Pet loving Downton Abbey actor, Peter Egan is also supporting the campaign and other celebrities already supporting the caus einclude Ed Sheeran who will be hosting an auction to raise money next month.

Peter Egan said: “Every year, thousands of sick, injured and homeless pets turn to Blue Cross animal hospitals and rehoming services for treatment and to find them the happy homes they deserve. From hamsters to horses, degus to dogs, Blue Cross is there to help pets in need. Steps for Pets is a wonderful way to support this important work.”

To join in with Steps for Pets, people need to commit to taking a certain number of steps during October, which can be counted with a free ‘petometer’ and also make a pledge to raise money for pets.

Steps for Pets will take place from October 1 till 31.
