FIREFIGHTERS were last night called back to a Southampton Burger King that had to be evacuated on Friday as smoke billowed from the first floor.

One fire appliance rushed to the Burger King in Bargate Street after its fire alarm went off at around 8.20pm Sunday night.

The fire crew from St Mary’s discovered that an electrical fault had caused the alarm to go off.

The restaurant in the busy city centre had to be dramatically evacuated on Friday after a blaze broke out at on the first floor at the height of the lunch-time rush.

Around 25 diners and eight members of staff managed to escape the building just before 12.12pm and were all unharmed.

Police closed the road last week as more than 35 firefighters and five engines from St Mary's, Redbridge, Totton and Romsey were on hand to tackle the blaze.

An investigation has since been launched to determine what caused the fire.
