Rain and the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan and Kevin Pietersen dampened the atmosphere at the Rose Bowl today.

The umpires carried out an initial inspection at 1pm and after two further inspections play was abandoned for the day.

With more rain forecast for the rest of the week, both sides are likely to have to settle for four points each.

Hampshire will not name their side until the toss but it will not include Pietersen, who is also a doubt for the first Test against the West Indies on May 17 after an MRI scan revealed he tore a calf muscle in the Bank Holiday win against Ireland - his first Rose Bowl appearance for a year.

Pietersen said: "It is extremely annoying. The muscle is torn and I'll have to see how it responds to treatment before I know if I'll be able to play in the Test.

"What I do know is that I'm desperate not to miss it and will do everything I can to get fit."
