Southampton's very own Craig David has continued his long-overdue comeback with a brilliant garage cover of Justin Bieber’s Love Yourself.

The Seven Days singer joined Trevor Nelson on Radio 1 Xtra for his unique take on the number one hit in the Live Lounge – which of course included some slick rapping from Craig.

Craig was at his height in the early 2000s with hits such as Fill Me In and Re-Rewind, but he’s been gaining momentum quickly since December when he appeared on stage with Fuse ODG and contestants Reggie N’ Bollie.

Twitter was declaring his comeback complete with the track.

It’s being hailed as the “best cover ever” of the song.

Craig told Trevor: “The love from the country is overwhelming.”

Craig also performed an acoustic version of his new single When The Bassline Drops with Big Narstie on the show, which is now climbing in the iTunes charts.

The star - who grew up on the Holy Rood estate in the city and went to school at Bellemoor - now known as Upper Shirley High - was one of the biggest stars of the UK Garage scene when it rose to prominence at the turn of the century.

He was honoured by the City of Southampton in 2013, as part of the 2013 Black History Month.

Craig David will also be headlining Southampton's Common People Festival in the summer, and is currently rumoured to be writing songs for Cheryl Fernandez-Versini's new album.

He currently lives in Miami.
