A NEW karting circuit could be built near the Hampshire border.

Plans to replace the Matchams Leisure Park track have been filed and if approved could lead to a circuit with a "potentially international reputation".

British Formula One champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button both began their careers in karting and there are hopes the new track could unearth another motor star.

Plans for the site, on land currently used for car boot sales next to Bournemouth Sports Club at Chapel Gate, will be decided on by Christchurch Borough Council.

It is also proposed to replace a number of low rise huts on the Green Belt land as well. They are "beyond economic repair", says the planning statement from agent, Chapman Partnership.

"The replacement of these huts will rejuvenate the existing run down appearance of the main entrance to Bournemouth Sports Club", it adds.

The single storey buildings will be put on the site already assembled, to avoid any disturbance on the Green Belt land, and positioned to respect the rural setting.

The agent's statement says surrounding attractions including garden centres, the sports' club, Bournemouth Aviation Museum and Adventure Wonderland attract thousands of holidaymakers and are all on Green Belt land.

The existing 420-metre track at Matchams Karting is also on Green Belt land.

George Lovell, director of Matchams Karting said: "Matchams Karting has been operating from its current location for the past 11 years.

"We have out grown our facility and are looking to create a bigger and better Karting experience venue for everyone.

"Having agreed terms on the new area, we plan to build one of best Karting facilities in the UK.

"We feel that the location is perfect as it compliments area with the adjacent sports centre and existing leisure facilities along the road.

"We will be able to secure more Jobs and have a state of the art circuit for local family's & holiday makers to enjoy.

"We aim to be one of Bournemouth's family entertainment hot spots and the new facility will add to Bournemouth's library of experiences on offer, of which we are confident will be at the top of peoples to do list."

It caters for stag and hen parties, birthday events, corporate functions and open events.
