Winds of up to 96mph have battered the South and high winds are set to continue to hit the South throughout the afternoon.

The Met Office's amber weather warning is in place until 6pm tonight.

But the agency says the stormy weather will subside from this evening onwards.

In its forecast, the organisation says: "Scattered blustery showers will die out overnight, with the strong to gale force winds slowly moderating. Some clear spells will develop, but thicker cloud may bring outbreaks of rain to the far south of the region by Tuesday morning. Minimum Temperature 2°C.

"Any more general cloud and rain in the far south should clear away east [on Tuesday] morning to leave a day of bright or sunny intervals and scattered showers. Maximum Temperature 8°C."
