A CAR left a path of destruction when it crashed into five cars and brought down a telegraph pole on a major Hampshire trunk road.

Homes across several Hampshire villages were left without power and two people taken to hospital following a series of incidents along the A36.

Officers from Wiltshire police are investigating after the driver of a black BMW 118d collided with a Peugeot 406 near the junction to the A27 close to Whiteparish on Friday night.

The car continued to travel along the road where there was another collision with a Land Rover Freelander near Landford Wood moments later.

Three other vehicles were involved in a smash with the BMW close to Wyevale Garden Centre where the driver of one of those cars, a Honda Jazz, was taken to Southampton General Hospital with minor injuries.

The car finally came to a stop when it was involved in a collision with a Peugeot 207 and a telegraph pole and ended up on its side at about 6.45pm.

The other vehicles damaged were a Mitsubishi Warrior and a Vauxhall Astra.

The driver of the BMW was taken to Southampton General Hospital with minor injuries.

Homes in Landford and Plaitford suffered were without power when a transformer was damaged in the incident.

The road was closed for several hours while officers searched for evidence and engineers fixed the power supply.

Keith Curtis, chairman of Plaitford Parish Council said: β€œIt must have been damaged by the impact of the accident. It shook it off to an extent that the cables were probably holding it.”

A 57-year old man from Hertfordshire has been arrested for failing to provide a specimen of breath.

Further information about the injuries to the other motorists is not available at the moment.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said they were continuing to investigate the incident.
