A “VICIOUS” late-night attack left a man in hospital suffering from head injuries.
The 21-year-old victim was on a footpath by Peninsula Road and Erskine Road in Winchester when he was assaulted.
Police are investigating after the incident, which happened between 10.30pm and 10.36pm on Saturday, March 19.
The victim lost his phone in the attack and officers believe it may have been a robbery.
Detective Constable Tracy West, said: “This was a vicious assault, to the point where the victim has no memory of what happened.
“This incident happened very close to the University and it was a Saturday evening.
“I am appealing to local residents and students who were in the area, who may have over heard an argument between some men, or may have seen what happened, to come forward.
“The victim does remember that he was using his phone at the time of the attack.
“As always, we would tell people to be mindful of their personal safety and try to avoid openly displaying their phones or other valuable items, leaving themselves open to items being stolen.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
