RESIDENTS are divided over measures to tackle the problem of motorists using roads in a Hampshire community as commuter parking.

They had called on the authorities to bring an end to their roads around Valley Park and Chandler's Ford being used as overflow parking by commuters for local employment and parents on the school run.

However, there has been mixed reaction to plans put forward, with some residents saying they will benefit them, others that it is unnecessary or will hinder them and others that it does not go far enough.

Parts of the scheme under Eastleigh Borough Council's jurisdiction are now being recommended for approval, though others have already been decided by Test Valley Borough Council.

In some areas the council is considering putting in double yellow lines on some sections and on others time limits.

It is hoped proposals will tackle safety issues with motorists trying to park or turn, parking by commuters mainly associated with the Hampshire Corporate Park, Chandler’s Ford industrial estate and Southampton and parking around two schools in Valley Park.

Early last year Test Valley Borough Council put in road markings in Castle Lane, Calshot Drive and Donnington Drive to tackle the issue.

But further plans have now been put forward, introducing a 'no waiting at any time' restriction on parts of Castle Lane, Conway Close, Donnington Drive, Montgomery Way and Odiham Close.

Councillors will also consider 'no waiting Monday to Friday 10am-11am and 2pm-3pm' zones to prevent all day parking on parts of Castle Lane, Conway Close, Donnington Drive, Guildford Drive, Montgomery Way, Netley Close, Odiham Close and Velmore Road.

Following a consultation in May last year 61 responses were received for roads within Eastleigh borough - 28 objecting, 23 in support and nine wanting amendments.

A report to councillors revealed how residents often did not agree between themselves, with one in favour and another against the same proposal.

In one case, four residents said of proposals to extend the double yellow lines in Castle Lane at the junction with Bournemouth Road that there was not a significant problem and parked cars kept the speed down, while another resident said they should be further extended.

Some residents wanted to see resident permits or changes to locations of restrictions or the extent of them.

Eleven objectors to plans for Velmore Road said there was little justification and that people would be unable to park outside their homes which would cause problems.

But the council report said, with the changes set to come in, cars would likely be displaced here.

It said issuing residents' permits in Castle Lane, Montgomery Way and Velmore was not feasible because most properties had off street parking.

Members of Chandler's Ford and Hiltingbury Local Area Committee meet at the Fryern Pavilion to discuss the measures tonight at 7pm.
