This Hampshire Heritage archive air picture takes in some of the most important industrial areas of Southampton, as seen in the 1950s.
In the foreground is the greater part of Northam, with its riverside wharves and berths, the big railway marshalling yard, gas works and timber yards and factories.
Beyond Northam is a part of Chapel, and, at the point of the peninsula, the Old Docks.
On the far side of the river lies Woolston with its shipyards.
Across Southampton Water can be glimpsed Hythe Pier, and, very faintly, at the far end of the Water, the Fawley oil tanks.
