A YOUNG art student is saying 'thank you ' to Naomi House and Jacksplace with a fundraising exhibition.

Kate Mellor has Congenital Muscular Dystrophy and has been attending Naomi House and Jacksplace since she was five-years-old. Based in Sutton Scotney on the outskirts of Winchester, both hospices provide expert care to more than 280 life-limited and life-threatened children, young people and their extended families across the south east.

“Naomi House and Jacksplace have supported me massively throughout my life – in terms of respite, and encouraging and promoting my photography,” explained Kate. “I wanted to take this opportunity to do something in return.”

The exhibition of photography and digital illustrations will also feature the work of Stanley Hayler-Magenis.

Both are final year digital media design students at the University of Winchester.

Kate’s work has been inspired by Louise Fili, a graphic designer known for her typography, logo and packaging skills. Each of Kate’s photographs in the exhibition focus on signs or words that are found in either Winchester or London – the old and the new capital.

“The Digital Media Design course at the University of Winchester has given me the flexibility to explore my creative skills in a supportive, encouraging environment,” added Kate. “I have had great support that will enable me to start up as a freelance photographer.”

Stanley Hayler-Magenis will be displaying a digital art piece centred on a fantasy traveller, with other work depicting the development and planning of the piece.

“This exhibition is fantastic opportunity to showcase our work, while raising money for a great cause,” said Stanley.

Kate and Stanley’s Photography and Illustration Exhibition runs until May 2 at the Link Gallery, West Downs Centre, University of Winchester, Romsey Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 5HT. The Link Gallery is open from 9am to 5pm weekdays and most weekends. Please note weekend opening may be restricted, please email visualart@winchester.ac.uk or telephone 01962 827578 to confirm.
