POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted and had her handbag stolen in Southampton.

The young mother was punched in the face during the attack which happened along Mount Pleasant Road towards Northam Bridge.

The 20-year-old was pushing her baby son when she heard someone shout to get her attention and as she turned she was punched and forced backwards.

A man and a woman were seen running away towards Northam Bridge after the attack at 4pm on Thursday.

The baby was uninjured but the woman suffered shock after the incident which happened at the junction of Derby Road opposite the Farmhouse public house. Approximately £40 in cash was stolen as well as bank cards.

The man is described as white, 5ft 8in-5ft 10in, broad shoulders, thin waist, mousey brown hair and wearing a dark blue beanie-style hat, dark tracksuit top, dark blue jeans and white trainers.

The woman is described as white, aged between 19 and 20 years, 5ft 5in-5ft 6in, small build, blond hair described as dirty', tied back in a ponytail to the right side of her head and wearing a pink tracksuit and a big chunky necklace.

Anyone with any information contact the Robbery Investigation Team at Hulse Road on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

what we need in this country is the burch for all these low life scumbags, then lets see if they come back for a second helping, apparently they have it in the isle of man and the crime rate is zero,so this could be the answer here ,something has to be done that people cant walk the streets without the fear of being stabbed murdered, beaten, and so forth it is out of control and the only way forward is the burch or national service or bootcamps .

For once I agree with Her Indoors, except for her unfortunate spelling of >>birch<<!!

Having re-read this article in the paper edition of the Echo and thought about it over a long period, I must confess to feeling quite upset.

Everyone has or has had a mother and there's no happier sight than a young mother taking her child out in the pram. Such walks are among my earliest recollections and they are surely very special to large numbers of people. I find the violent disruption of a mother's walk with her child, in the way that the article describes, a truly loathsome thing.

The temptation is to let this hatred of the crime convert into a visceral hatred of the perpetrators - but this is not the answer. It would be a serious error of judgment.

Not least because the thieving pair will have only a limited awareness of how people like me feel towards their action.

So - the answer? If only it were so simple! I feel nevertheless that it would help to put the commerce of soft drugs onto a regulated, legal footing. With a return to the old system of dispensing harder drugs under tight medical supervision.

Packed my bags already, and glad to be rid of all the scum which exists, particularly in Southampton.

Yes, Moscow is a crime hotspot, but nobody would ever consider this type of attack here.

The majority of people don't commit crime in this city, because they are 100% afraid of the police, and what they might do to people, who may have committed an offence.

Would the last person leaving Britain, switch off the light!

Once again, I think I'm gonna have to leave this country to the latest batch of incomers. The Polish, czechs etc., - you're welcome to it!

Oh, HI, (Her Indoors) - I'm MUCH younger than you, not being 64 until August, though my spouse is older than me. Not being a Roman Catholic or a sex maniac (- do you know the joke? -) I have a very middle-class two children only. Maman crossed to the other realm some time ago.

One last token comment for this thread, before the Echo gives me a flea in the ear:

Thank heaven for the Poles! I love em. They're giving this town a moral regeneration! Bring on more!

Rest assured attackers because once you are caught your get slapped wrists (if only), 50 hours community service (that you will not bother to do), maybe a prison sentence (with hotel facilities and the chance to improve your career prospects), housing (in the middle of a respectable housing estate so you can sell the kids drugs) and of course enough benefits so you never have to do an honest days work in your sad pathetic lives!

No surprise there then. Must have been a junkie scum couple and we know that the female must be a Vicky Pollard fan?

What a shame that there weren't a couple of capable lads nearby who could have sorted out the brave slimeball who hit a mother in the face as she pushed her baby down the street.

These dregs of society really need a zero tolerance hammering. This was at 4pm too? Incredible. What will this Pikey Bonnie and Clyde do next - wait outside some school gates and mug the mums???
