TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a car ploughed into a house.

A Vauxhall Zafira mounted the pavement, smashed through a concrete wall and into the front room of a ground floor flat around 7.30pm on Sunday night.

Miraculously Ainars Puzulis and his girlfriend Zane Krigere, who live in the property in Burlington Road, Southampton, were unhurt.

But if the incident happened just a few hours later the couple would have been asleep in that room.

Hampshire police have now confirmed that two men, a 42-year-old and a 44-year-old, both from Southampton, have been arrested in connection with the crash on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle while above the alcohol level.

The pair are still in police custody.

Firefighter and incident commander Watch Manager Stuart Vince said the house had been inspected by a structural engineer and the fire service’s urban search and rescue advisor who both agreed it was unsafe.

He said the house occupants would be rehoused by the fire service emergency support vehicle.

The scene was fenced off overnight, but he added there was thought to be no danger of the house collapsing.
