A HUGE geiser erupted in a quiet country road today sending water shooting up around 20ft into the air.

When residents woke they were greeted water gushing up from the road and soaring over the trees lining the carriageway.

Bishopstoke Lane near Eastleigh where the flood took place has been closed while repairs are carried out and water in the surrounding area has been shut off.

The fountain of water was caused by a burst water main under the road which happened around 6.30am this morning.

Julie Wale, who lives in Bishopstoke Lane, said: “I got up just after 6am and I heard a funny noise, but when I came out later on I could see all this water literally gushing.

“I could see it from my back door from behind the trees.”

The retired 74-year-old added: “This is the first time I have known something like this to happen.”

Another resident said: “It was just like a fountain with the water spreading out in different directions.

“At about 9.30am we had our water shut off and we were told not to go to close to the water because the road is giving in and it could make the hole bigger.”

The water supply to the local area was shut off causing to “fountain” of water to reduce in size.

Glen Stock, the Hampshire county water distribution manager for Southern Water, was at the scene and said: “There is a 10 inch cast iron mains that has burst.

“There are a small handful of customers affected and we are delivering bottled water to them.

“The carriageway will be rebuilt today and water will be restored soon.”
